SEBAUH: The public has been urged to practise sustainable management of natural resources to safeguard fishery resources for future generations.
Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said small fish and prawns, as well as those that are spawning, should be left undisturbed to allow natural breeding to take place.
“If the fish are spawning, do not catch and bring them home. Let them breed so that we will continue to have plenty of fish,” he said when officiating at the Agricultural Community Outreach Programme (AGRICOP) at Rumah Renang Berita here recently.
Rundi also reminded the public not to use fishing methods that could destroy river ecosystems, such as poisoning or using toxic substances to catch fish.
He stressed that awareness of the need to protect natural resources must be cultivated to ensure the resources enjoyed today could be passed on to future generations.
“Sustainability of these resources is our responsibility and it must be maintained for the long term so that future generations can also enjoy them,” he said.
