KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak government will take a firm approach in settling the RM1 billion loan contra formula in solving the issue of dilapidated schools in the state.

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook account today, Education and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee said the agreed loan contra formula had been rejected by the Ministry of Education (MoE).

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has decided to take a firm stance in rejecting the request from Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng to Sarawak to pay in advance the RM1 billion allocation for the repair of dilapidated schools to the ministry.

“We wait for the result of the discussion, but on my part, I would like to see a solution that benefits students in Sarawak because we need the funds to repair dilapidated schools in the state as soon as possible,” he said when met after attending the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) Talk at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in Kota Samarahan today.

About 50 students comprising student council representatives from several public and private institutions of higher learning attended the talk aimed at listening to suggestions and finding the best solution in repayment of the PTPTN.

Asked whether the issue would take a long time, Annuar explained Abang Johari would have a further discussion with Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik at the end of this month.
