KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) distributed face masks to the public as part of efforts to promote public health awareness amid the ongoing haze situation.

The masks were distributed by its mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, together with MBKS councillors and community leaders, to hawkers, traders, market-goers and members of the public at at Kenyalang Market and Sungai Apong Market.

Wee expressed appreciation to Saramed Sdn Bhd and Tay Motors for donating the masks for distribution to the community.

“I would like to thank Saramed Sdn Bhd and Tay Motors for coming forward to support the community during this haze situation.

“Such contributions are meaningful as they allow us to reach out directly to the public and remind everyone to take care of their health,” he said in a statement today.

Wee said the haze should not be taken lightly, particularly when air quality deteriorates, and advised residents to stay updated on the latest air quality readings and take necessary precautions, especially children, senior citizens and those more sensitive to poor air quality.

He encouraged the public to reduce unnecessary outdoor activities when air quality is unhealthy, wear suitable face masks outdoors, stay hydrated, keep doors and windows closed where appropriate, and seek medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties or other health concerns.

“The haze affects all of us. While the authorities continue to monitor the situation, every individual also has a role to play in protecting themselves and their families.

“Please take the necessary precautions and do not underestimate the effects of prolonged exposure to unhealthy air,” he added.

MBKS said it will continue to monitor the haze situation and work with relevant agencies and community partners to safeguard the wellbeing of residents in Kuching South.
