SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, reminded Malaysians that the Jalur Gemilang is not merely a flag flown during Independence celebrations, but a symbol of the nation that belongs to and is shared by all Malaysians.
His Royal Highness said that although Malaysians differ in race, religion, language, political beliefs and background, the Jalur Gemilang reminds them that they are still citizens of the same country.
“This flag belongs to all of us. We should be proud because it is a symbol of national unity,” His Royal Highness said in a statement today.
Previously, Sultan Sharafuddin had consented to the Jalur Gemilang being flown at the Selangor Flagpole at Dataran Selangor from Aug 26 to Sept 17 in conjunction with the National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations.
Following this, a Jalur Gemilang-hoisting ceremony was held at Dataran Selangor this morning as a symbol of love for the country and to foster the spirit of patriotism and unity among the people.
The Ruler said the spirit of National Day should also be reflected by remembering and appreciating the contributions of Malaysians who have worked to unite society and bridge differences.
At the same time, His Royal Highness said the younger generation should be taught to respect people of different religions, races and cultures.
“In addition, leaders and politicians should set an example by practising moderation, tolerance and compassion, and should not use political, racial or religious differences as an excuse to divide the people.
Sultan Sharafuddin said flying thousands of Jalur Gemilang throughout the National Month was easy.
“However, the far greater task is to build a Malaysia where people of every race, religion and background truly feel respected, accepted and proud to be Malaysians,” His Royal Highness said.
His Royal Highness also reminded that the Jalur Gemilang has never distinguished between Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazan-Dusuns, Ibans or any other ethnic group, nor does it distinguish between Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus or any other faith.
Therefore, he called on all Malaysians to use the country’s independence anniversary celebrations as an opportunity to strengthen the spirit of unity, togetherness and mutual respect.
“Independence is not merely to be celebrated, and the flag is not merely to be flown. The true value of both lies in our ability to uphold a country where its people can live together in peace, mutual respect and unity,” His Royal Highness said. – BERNAMA
