SARIKEI: Issues and challenges faced by small traders at the Bintangor Tamu Market and Hawker Centre will be looked into to identify appropriate follow-up action, including matters under the jurisdiction of the local authority.
Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said it was important to hear directly from traders about the problems they faced to enable practical solutions to be identified.
“I understand that the hawkers here earn their livelihood every day and face various challenges. What is important is for us to go to the ground, listen to their problems ourselves and find the best solutions,” he said.
Huang was conducting a walkabout and inspection at the Bintangor Tamu Market and Hawker Centre on Wednesday (Aug 26) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
Huang said matters under the jurisdiction of the Meradong and Julau District Council (MDMJ) would be given due attention, while issues requiring special allocations or action by other agencies would be referred to the relevant parties.
“The government wants to ensure that development is not only focused on major projects but also directly benefits people running small businesses,” he said.
During the visit, traders raised concerns relating to infrastructure facilities and the day-to-day operations of the area.
Huang, who is also Sarikei MP and Repok assemblyman, said hawkers and small traders played an important role in driving the local economy.
He said continued attention should be given to providing them with adequate facilities and a safe and orderly business environment.
