KUCHING: A local man may have landed himself in serious trouble after police seized more than 1.1kg of suspected cannabis from him – a haul that could carry the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted.
The 28-year-old was arrested by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at around 1:30 pm in Pending on Wednesday (Aug. 26).
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the team allegedly found 1,138g of suspected cannabis during a search on the suspect, with the haul estimated to be worth RM3,410.
“The suspect also tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, in an initial urine screening. Background checks also found that he had no prior criminal record,” he said.
He added that the suspect is being remanded for seven days until September 3 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Upon conviction, the man could face the death penalty, or life imprisonment and whipping of up to 12 strokes.
Alexson said the arrest was the result of continued intelligence-gathering efforts and cooperation from members of the public.
Police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug trafficking as possessing, distributing or protecting drug-related activities are serious offences.
