Drug addict gets five years’ jail, whipping

KUCHING: A 47-year-old man with four previous convictions for drug offences was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for self-administering dangerous drugs.

Bong Siak Siong pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Musli Ab Hamid after the charge was read to him.

The court heard that Bong tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at about 9.05 am on Nov 25, 2025, at the Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (BSJN) office of the Bau District Police Headquarters (IPD Bau).

The prosecution said Bong had four previous convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The previous convictions were recorded at the Bau Magistrates’ Court in 2011, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Bong was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) and sentenced under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.

Under the provision, an offender with previous convictions for drug use may be sentenced to between five and seven years’ imprisonment and whipping of up to three strokes.

Judge Musli also ordered Bong to undergo police supervision upon completing his prison sentence.

He was unrepresented, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid appeared for the prosecution.
