KUCHING: Professional boxer Daeloniel McDelon Bong, better known as Kilat Boy, has called on the Sarawak Boxing Association (SABA) to appoint a president with a genuine passion for boxing, warning against choosing a leader simply to fill the vacancy.
In a post on his official Facebook page today (Aug 29), Kilat Boy said the association’s next president should possess the knowledge, experience and commitment needed to safeguard the future of boxing in Sarawak while understanding the needs of its athletes.
“The association needs someone who truly understands boxing and has a heart for the sport. If it’s merely about filling the position, then don’t. Let someone who is genuinely passionate about boxing lead the association,” he wrote.
His comments come following the passing of SABA president, Allahyarham Datuk Dr Rahman Lariwoo, with the association’s vice-president, Datuk Johnny Ting Su King, having publicly expressed his readiness to assume the presidency.
Kilat Boy also urged SABA to ensure the leadership transition was carried out through the proper process, allowing members to choose the most suitable candidate.
“Hold the meeting properly and choose the best person to lead the association,” he said.
He stressed that his comments were not driven by personal interests or financial considerations, but by his concern for the future of boxing in Sarawak.
“I’m speaking because this is the right thing to do. This isn’t about money; it’s about the future of the sport. I truly love boxing,” he said.
Acknowledging that his views might not sit well with everyone, Kilat Boy said he was speaking sincerely in the hope of seeing boxing in Sarawak continue to grow.- TVS
