ROME, Italy: A severe storm accompanied by hail and strong winds hit Cremona in northern Italy on Friday (Aug. 28), injuring 43 people and causing extensive damage across the city, Xinhua reported, citing local media.
The storm caused significant damage in about 10 minutes, with roads blocked by fallen trees and debris, roofs damaged and at least 10,000 vehicles affected, stated Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The storm victims who were taken to hospital suffered minor injuries, mainly caused by hail, falling debris and strong wind gusts.
Cremona Cathedral was among the buildings damaged in the storm. Part of the covering of a tower on the northern side of the cathedral collapsed, while the large glass window on the main facade was visibly damaged.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel worked through the night to clear fallen trees and debris, secure damaged areas and assist people in difficulty.
Authorities continued to assess the damage and restore normal conditions in the city today. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
