KUCHING: The trails of Matang got a new test of endurance over the weekend as hundreds of runners took part in the inaugural ‘Run The Rimba 2026’ at The Tibodak Village recently.

Organised by The Bold Warriors Adventure & Exploration Club in partnership with Pro Outdoor Gear, the debut event brought seasoned trail runners and first-timers onto the single-track routes of Matang Lorong 10, where participants tackled elevation changes and technical terrain beneath the rainforest canopy.

Beyond the race itself, organisers positioned the event as a way of showcasing Matang’s natural and cultural attractions while drawing visitors to the area through outdoor sport.

The event also promoted responsible trail use, with participants encouraged to be properly equipped while observing leave-no-trace principles aimed at protecting the surrounding ecosystem.

The Bold Warriors Adventure & Exploration Club’s President, Richard Lee, said the event was conceived as more than a race, with the organisers hoping to highlight Matang as a sports-tourism destination.

“We envisioned ‘Run The Rimba’ not just as a race, but as an experience that highlights the raw beauty of our natural landscape while putting Matang firmly on the map as a premier sport tourism destination,” he said.

He said the strong response from runners, partners and the local community had exceeded expectations for the inaugural edition, adding that the event was only the beginning.

With the maiden event now completed, organisers said discussions for the next edition are already underway, with plans pointing towards expanded routes and a larger gathering of outdoor enthusiasts.
