KUCHING: Sarawak will not hold its state-level National Day gathering, which was scheduled to be centred in Kapit this year, due to the haze affecting large parts of the state.
In announcing the decision, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg called on Sarawakians to continue appreciating the peace, harmony and unity enjoyed in the country.
He said despite the cancellation of the gathering, National Day remained an important occasion for Malaysians to reflect on the country’s journey and appreciate the peace and harmony enjoyed over the years.
He described Malaysia as a large family that provides a common umbrella for its constituent regions.
He said much had been achieved towards developing a modern and progressive economy and society during Sarawak’s 63 years within Malaysia.
“However, there is still much to be done to build a developed, inclusive and sustainable future for Sarawak, as outlined under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said in his message in conjunction with the Sarawak-level 69th National Day celebration.
He also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his assurance that the federal government would continue strengthening cooperation with Sarawak and Sabah to promote the well-being of the people and more equitable and balanced development.
“I am confident that with the win-win spirit among the federal, Sarawak and Sabah leaders, these regions will continue to transform from commodity-based economies into green, high-technology and sustainable economies under the umbrella of a progressive and stable Malaysia, God willing,” he said.
Abang Johari said the continued development of Sarawak must be accompanied by efforts to preserve unity within its multiracial and multireligious society.
He urged Sarawakians to continue safeguarding the peace and harmony that had been enjoyed while working together to build a state that would be a source of pride for future generations.
“Once again, I wish a Happy 69th National Day to all Sarawakians and Malaysians,” he said.
