PUTRAJAYA: The number of Malaysians reported uncontactable remains at 36 in China and 55 in Nepal, despite earlier reports that three Malaysians were among foreign nationals unaccounted for following a mudslide at Gyirong Port in Xizang, China.
In a statement today, the Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, took note of reports by authorities in Xizang that three Malaysians were among foreign nationals unaccounted for following the August 26 mudslide at Gyirong Port.
“The ministry confirms that these three Malaysians are already included in the 36 Malaysians currently reported as uncontactable in China and do not represent additional cases. As such, the current figures remain at 36 Malaysians (in China) and 55 Malaysians (in Nepal).
“The Malaysian embassies in Beijing and Kathmandu are continuing to work with the relevant authorities to ascertain the safety and whereabouts of those who remain uncontactable, while cross-checking information from both countries to identify any duplication,” the statement read.
The ministry said that over the past few days, the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu had also extended consular assistance to family members of Malaysians who remain uncontactable and who had travelled to the Nepalese capital.
It added that the embassy had provided updates on the current situation and guidance on local procedures, assisted in coordinating with the relevant Nepalese authorities and, where necessary, accompanied family members to relevant facilities in Kathmandu.
“Family members were also advised to comply with all safety instructions issued by the Nepalese authorities, while the Malaysian embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing continued to engage the respective authorities on gaining access to areas closer to the affected sites.
“Any movement by Malaysian officers to these areas will be subject to approval by the relevant authorities, as well as prevailing safety and access conditions on the ground,” it said.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s Operations Room in Putrajaya continues to operate around the clock to coordinate information and assist Malaysians in the affected areas and their families.

The ministry also urged the public not to speculate or share unverified information while efforts to establish the safety and whereabouts of the Malaysians concerned remain ongoing.
