MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia: The Holy Quran Museum at the Hira Cultural District in Makkah showcases a rare Quranic manuscript: a page from a Quran dating back to the third century AH, corresponding to the ninth century CE, a historic artefact documenting an aspect of the early stages of Quranic manuscript production, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
The displayed manuscript includes part of Surah Maryam, written on parchment in red ink. The text contains neither vowel marks nor diacritical dots, highlighting a characteristic of the early stages of Quranic manuscript writing.
This allows museum visitors to learn about the development of Quranic writing and the methods used to record the Quran during the early Islamic centuries.
