SELANGOR: Sarawak para-athletics head coach, Matthew Chin Hiong Choi, believes his charges are well prepared for the 2026 Para SUKMA, with some capable of rewriting the record books.
He said the squad’s preparations had been ongoing for the past two years, with the athletes now making their final adjustments after arriving at Stadium UiTM Shah Alam, where the athletics competition will be held from September 6 to 10.
“We have been preparing for about two years, and at this stage, we have already arrived at the stadium to compete,” he told reporters at Stadium UiTM Shah Alam today.
Matthew said the squad had also undergone a month-long training camp before travelling to Selangor, with the athletes completing up to six training sessions a day.
The intensive programme also allowed the athletes to adapt to different training conditions, including morning and afternoon sessions, he said.
“We have already adapted to the weather in the morning and afternoon. Before we left, we were also tested by the haze,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Matthew said he was satisfied with the squad’s overall preparations and believed the athletes were now ready to perform.
“From the athletes’ performance, each of them can do it, and some are already capable of breaking records.
“So, I am satisfied, happy and proud of these athletes who have trained under us,” he added.
