KUCHING: Proposed amendments to Sarawak’s key housing laws remain under review by the State Attorney-General’s Chambers (SAG), with no firm timeline for their tabling in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the proposed amendments involved the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Ordinance 2013 (HDO 2013) and Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Regulations 2014 (HDR 2014).
He said the proposals were currently with the SAG, which was reviewing and refining them.
“At the end of the day, sometimes it’s the SAG. They refine it, they want to enable it and so on,” he said at the opening of the SHEDA Property Expo 2026 today.
Dr Sim was responding to Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association’s (SHEDA) President, Datuk Augustine Wong, who sought an assurance that the proposed amendments could be tabled in the DUN within the remaining legislative term.
Wong said the industry needed certainty over the regulatory framework to enable property developers to plan ahead with greater clarity.
Dr Sim indicated that such legislative processes could take time, citing another state ordinance which he said had taken about two years to work through.
Nevertheless, he reiterated the state government’s willingness to engage with SHEDA over regulatory issues affecting the property development industry.
He said discussions could continue between the government and industry on areas requiring improvement, stressing that relevant government officials were accessible to industry players.
Dr Sim also encouraged SHEDA to continue engaging with the state government as Sarawak reviews regulations to keep pace with changing industry needs.
