MIRI: Miri is set to strengthen its position as a regional combat sports destination with the return of the Miri Amateur Muaythai Challenge 2026: The Return (MAMC26) next week.
Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the two-day event would go beyond competition by providing young athletes with a safe and professionally managed platform to develop discipline, confidence and sportsmanship.
“MAMC26 shows what becomes possible when sport, community and regional partnership move together: young talent receives a platform, families share an experience, and Miri strengthens its position on Borneo’s sporting map.”
Organised by Persatuan Muaythai Bahagian Miri, the event will bring together athletes, coaches and competitors from Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
MAMC26 will be held at Permy Mall on Sept 11 and 12, with the official opening at 7.30pm on Sept 11. Organisers expect between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators throughout the event.
Yii said events such as MAMC26 could also create opportunities for local businesses, hospitality providers and tourism operators while showcasing Miri as a capable host for regional sporting events.
He welcomed the organisers’ focus on amateur and grassroots development, stressing that safety and sporting integrity must remain priorities, supported by qualified officials, medical support and responsible event management.
He urged Miri residents and visitors to come out and support the athletes, saying the city should demonstrate the hospitality and community spirit for which Miri is known.
