MIRI: Miri’s Muaythai scene is looking to strengthen its grassroots pipeline with the Miri Amateur Muaythai Challenge 2026 (MAMC26), returning for its second edition at Permy Mall here from Sept 11 to 12.
The two day event aims to promote Muaythai among youths, uncover emerging talent and provide aspiring fighters with a platform to showcase their abilities while gaining valuable competition experience.
Organising chairman Gavin Mattu said the bigger goal was to make combat sports a more regular fixture in Miri and create more opportunities for young people to get involved.
“The ultimate goal is for combat sports events to be more recurring in Miri, with more private companies giving their support.
“This also helps to promote health and fitness to youths in Miri,” he said.
He also expressed his appreciation for the continued backing from the local authorities, particularly the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Arts and Performing Arts and Miri City Council, as well as Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).
The event is a joint effort between Persatuan Muaythai Miri and Persatuan Muaythai Sarawak, with sanctioning from Persatuan Muaythai Malaysia.
Gavin said the combined support was important in helping create a platform where young fighters could develop their skills and pursue their potential in the sport.
“The hope is for many more outstanding combat sports events to occur in Miri, to bring up the sport and provide youths outlets to showcase talent and develop the future of Sarawak combat sports within Miri,” he added.
MAMC26 is supported by Selesa Pacific Hospital, Mercure Miri City Centre and Permy Mall Naim.
