MIRI: Police have arrested a 41-year-old local man in connection with the theft of a motorcycle in the Tudan area here.
Miri district police said a report was lodged on August 25 at about 5.16pm by a 37-year-old local man after his motorcycle went missing from a car and tyre service workshop at Technology Park Tudan.
The motorcycle had been left at the workshop at about 7pm on August 23.
The following morning, at around 7.30am, the complainant discovered that the motorcycle was missing.
Police said the man had initially tried to locate the motorcycle himself but was unsuccessful before lodging a report at a nearby police station.
Investigations by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, including intelligence gathering, led police to a 41-year-old suspect.
He was arrested at about 12.05pm on Sept 7 in front of a supermarket in the Tudan area.
Police said the arrest subsequently led to the recovery of the stolen motorcycle, which had allegedly been hidden by the suspect in bushes around Tudan Desaras 2 area.
The suspect has several previous criminal records and is also believed to be a drug addict. Police said he is unemployed.
He has been remanded for three days until September 11 to assist investigations under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of between one and seven years, as well as a possible fine upon conviction.
Police have urged the public to take additional precautions to prevent vehicle theft, including ensuring that motorcycles and other vehicles are properly locked when left in public car parks or within fenced premises.
