KUCHING: A single careless act by a chef representing Kuching abroad could damage the city’s international reputation.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said every chef, culinary team or organisation travelling outside Sarawak carries the name of Kuching and the responsibility tied to its UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status.
“When you represent Kuching, you must give your full commitment because it cannot be half-hearted,” he said in a speech delivered on his behalf by Kuching South City Council Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng at the third anniversary charity dinner ‘Empurau Rainforest Night’ at the Grand Riverine Ballroom here on Wednesday (Sept 9).
Dr Sim said cleanliness, food safety, presentation, professionalism, behaviour and communication must be maintained as they influence the impression created overseas.
With social media allowing incidents to gain worldwide attention within hours, he said representing the city should not be viewed merely as an opportunity to travel or participate in an event.
The dinner raised RM16,000 for charity, with Pertubuhan Pembangunan Insan Sarawak and Persatuan Penyayang Bunga Matahari Kuching receiving RM8,000 each.
The programme also saw the Sarawak Gourmet Association sign a memorandum of understanding with Abdul Muluk Rambli to develop a halal Sarawak cuisine recipe book before honouring him with a Lifetime Achievement Award, while composer Datuk Fong Siaw Chin was recognised for his contribution to music, arts and culture.
Dr Sim also urged culinary associations and industry players to work as one team when promoting Sarawak rather than focusing on individual recognition.
He said they should present not only the dishes but also the stories behind their ingredients, growers, communities and cultural significance.
“When people hear the name Kuching, they should associate it not only with good food, but also with quality, professionalism, authenticity and hospitality,” he said.
