KUALA LUMPUR: Global Peace Mission (GPM) Malaysia has deployed three humanitarian workers to Nepal to assess the needs of victims following the deadly floods in the country.
GPM Malaysia chief executive officer Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said the team will be in Nepal from today until Sept 14.
The assessment and survey mission is being carried out in collaboration with Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
He said the team would assess the current situation in affected areas and identify the needs of victims to enable post-disaster assistance to be delivered more effectively
“Initial priorities for assistance currently include hygiene kits, blankets and basic food supplies for affected families,” he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Fahmi said the disaster on Aug 26 caused extensive destruction in several areas, particularly along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.
As of Sept 9, Nepalese authorities had confirmed that 1,367 bodies had been recovered, while more than 5,000 people were still reported missing.
GPM Malaysia urged Malaysians to show solidarity and help ease the burden of those affected.
