SIBU: The spirit of independence must go beyond freedom from colonial rule and be reflected in the courage to think independently, stand up for what is right and take responsibility for shaping the nation’s future, says Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.
The Bawang Assan assemblyman said true freedom was not about doing whatever one wanted but about understanding that freedom must always be accompanied by responsibility.
“‘Merdeka’ means much more than freedom from colonial rule. It means having the freedom to think, the freedom to learn, the courage to speak up for what is right, and the responsibility to determine our own future,” he said when officiating at the Semarak Hari Malaysia programme themed “Madani, Jiwa Merdeka” at SMK Kwong Hua here yesterday.
Wong said the theme was particularly meaningful as it reflected the values that should shape the younger generation and the country they would inherit.
Addressing the students, he reminded them that they would become the future of Malaysia and would inherit a nation characterised by diversity in race, religion, language and culture.
He said Sarawak had long demonstrated that differences could be a source of strength rather than division.
“We do not have to be the same to live together. We only need to respect one another.”
He said Malaysia must continue to be built as a country where everyone, regardless of background, had a place and an opportunity to succeed.
He added that the spirit of Malaysia Madani should be reflected through humanity, mutual respect, inclusiveness, integrity and responsibility, rather than remaining merely as slogans.
“These values must begin with each one of us — in our homes, in our schools and in our communities,” he said, urging students to respect their teachers, appreciate their parents, help their friends and reject bullying and discrimination.
Wong also highlighted the importance of kindness and dignity in interpersonal relationships, particularly among young people growing up in an increasingly connected society.
Touching on the influence of social media, he cautioned students against accepting everything they encountered online as truth.
With young people having access to more information than any previous generation, he said they must learn to question, verify information and think critically.
“Do not allow social media to think for you. A free spirit must also be an independent mind.”
Wong also called on the younger generation to understand the historical significance of Malaysia Day, particularly from Sarawak’s perspective.
He said Sept 16, 1963 marked the formation of Malaysia through the coming together of Sarawak, Sabah and the Federation of Malaya, making the occasion an important reminder of Sarawak’s place within the federation.
“For us in Sarawak, Malaysia Day has a special significance. It reminds us of our place in this federation and of the importance of respecting the diversity and unique identity of every part of Malaysia.”
He stressed that Malaysia would be stronger when its people appreciated their differences while remaining united by a common destiny.
Wong also urged students to pursue their ambitions without allowing their background to determine the limits of their dreams.
“Dream big. Work hard. Keep learning. Have courage. And, above all, maintain your integrity.”
He said the future would belong to those who were willing to learn, adapt and persevere, adding that Malaysia needed young people who were not only successful but also responsible, compassionate and proud of their country.
“Merdeka is not merely about remembering our past. Merdeka is about having the courage to shape our future.”
Wong concluded by calling on Malaysians to keep Madani values in their daily lives, preserve the spirit of independence and strengthen unity in building a stronger, more united and prosperous Malaysia.
At the event, he also contributed a water dispenser for the school’s use.
