KUCHING: Residents in Batu 6 are encouraged to work together with the police, Jabatan Sukarelawan Malaysia (RELA) and community leaders through a Neighborhood Watch group to strengthen security in the area.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the group would provide a platform for residents to alert one another and the authorities about suspicious activities.
He revealed the group included police from Kota Sentosa, RELA personnel, community leaders, councillors and himself.
“The reason why I set up this Neighborhood Watch group is for us to better take care of one another,” he said during the Community Engagement and Dialogue Programme at Choon Foh Kopitiam, Capital Garden here today (Sept 12).
Lo stressed that residents could alert the group in the event of a break-in or other suspicious activity, allowing the police and nearby residents to respond.
He said neighbours could help deter potential intruders by shining their vehicle lights, sounding their horns or making noise, without attempting to confront or catch them.
“We are not trying to catch thieves. We don’t need to go and catch the thief, but for the sake of taking care of one another — you look out for me, I look out for you,” he said.
Lo noted that such cooperation would help improve security and create a safer neighbourhood.
He added that concerns and requests raised by residents during the dialogue would be documented and forwarded to the relevant agencies for follow-up.
He said representatives from the police, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) were present at the session.
Lo added that Councillor Jared Lau would assist in compiling residents’ contact numbers for inclusion in the Neighborhood Watch group.
