KUCHING: The Social Welfare Council of Sarawak (SWCS) will host its inaugural 2026 Welfare Carnival on Oct 17 and 18 at Boulevard Mall 2 here.
Carrying the theme “Stronger Minds, Safer Choices”, the two-day event marks the council’s 77th anniversary of service to the community.
SWCS president Datin Seri Dona Drury Wee, together with organizing chairman Lucas Lim, first secretary David Law, and council members, recently paid a courtesy call on Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at Wisma Bapa Malaysia to extend an official invitation for him to officiate the opening ceremony.
Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, commended SWCS for its unwavering commitment to social welfare since the pre-independence era.
He noted that the council’s ability to remain active and relevant reflects its resilience, dedication, and strong sense of community responsibility in championing welfare initiatives across Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Lim highlighted that this first-ever carnival will focus heavily on mental health awareness, emotional resilience, and healthy lifestyles, while also addressing contemporary social challenges such as substance abuse.
“Through educational initiatives, the council hopes to encourage informed decision-making and support wider efforts to curb drug abuse in society.
“We also aim to uphold our mission of ‘Strengthening Communities, Caring for Humanity’ by attracting more young volunteers and fostering cross-sector partnerships,” Lim said.
The event will gather SWCS member associations, the Kuching Division Health Office, Kuching Division Welfare Department, academic institutions and community leaders.
A key highlight of the carnival will be the presentation of the Sarawak Southern Region Excellence and Service Awards to honour outstanding volunteers and social workers nominated by southern region member associations.
SWCS invites the public to attend the carnival and expressed its gratitude to donors, corporate partners and supporters for sustaining its welfare mission over the decades.
