MIRI: The Sarawak government will bear the education expenses of Euodia, the daughter of late Flying Doctor Service (FDS) nurse Debra Moset, until she fulfils her ambition of becoming a doctor, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (Sept 13).
He said the state government would also look into providing similar assistance to the children of other victims of the FDS helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Ulu Baram.
“Today, I read about a child who lost her mother. Her mother was a nurse named Debra. Her daughter said she would study hard to become a doctor and continue her mother’s sacrifice.
“To her daughter, Euodia, the Sarawak government will bear her education expenses until she becomes a doctor. Likewise, for the children of the other victims,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Zone Special Convention 2026 at Miri Indoor Stadium here today.
Abang Johari said the convention was being held in a sombre atmosphere following the Long Lellang tragedy, which claimed the lives of five healthcare personnel and a pilot on Tuesday (Sept 8).
“We pray that their souls will be placed in a peaceful and tranquil place,” he said.
He said the loss of a father or mother could not be measured in monetary terms, but the Sarawak government would continue to provide assistance to the affected families.
Abang Johari said Euodia’s determination to pursue medicine in memory of her late mother had touched him and strengthened his resolve to find alternative ways to provide better services to people in rural and interior areas.
“This is what gives me the spirit to find alternative ways for us to provide services to the people in rural areas, especially those in the interior,” he said.
Euodia had earlier vowed to fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor in honour of her mother in an emotional TikTok post that later went viral on social media.
In the post, she pledged to earn the title “Dr Euodia” within the next 10 years in memory of her mother.
“Kakak will do it in mommy’s name. Be happy in the afterlife, my angel,” she wrote.
Debra, 40, a Bidayuh from Kampung Semadang, Padawan, was among the five healthcare personnel killed in the FDS helicopter crash at Long Lellang, Ulu Baram, on Tuesday. She is survived by her husband and three children.
The other victims were pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham, 30; medical officer Dr Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, 33; assistant medical officer Alexson Adit Henry, 31; and staff nurse Jessie Paya Jok, 44.
