MIRI: A Sarawak Bumiputera-owned company involved in oil and gas is set to be listed on Bursa Malaysia, marking another milestone in efforts to strengthen Bumiputera participation in the corporate and business sectors.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the listing reflected the state government’s continued agenda to develop Bumiputera entrepreneurs and increase their participation in business and industry.

“This coming Monday, there is a company involved in oil and gas, a Bumiputera company owned by our people, which will be listed on Bursa Malaysia.

“This is our agenda — the agenda to develop the Bumiputera economy. This is the foundation of our struggle and what we should pursue to develop entrepreneurs and businesses among the Bumiputera community,” he said this in his welcoming speech during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Zone Special Convention 2026 at Miri Indoor Stadium here today.

He said the state government wanted to further increase Bumiputera participation in the business sector, including through stronger involvement in small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“If we want to cooperate, we must cooperate properly. We want to increase our community’s participation in the enterprise sector, particularly small and medium enterprises. This is our struggle in today’s world,” he said.

Awang Tengah said the initiative is in line with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision for Sarawak to lead the new economy.

He said Sarawak is pursuing growth in areas including the digital economy, high-tech industries, hydrogen production, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, aerospace, sustainable mining and sustainable forest management.

“These are all aimed at ensuring Sarawak’s future remains secure while increasing the income of our people,” he said.

Awang Tengah said the northern zone of Sarawak possesses significant economic potential, including oil and gas resources as well as renewable energy opportunities.

He pointed to major hydroelectric developments such as Bakun, Murum and Baleh as examples of the State’s renewable energy strengths, while noting that other areas in the northern region also had potential for similar development.

He said the region also has considerable potential in food security and agriculture, alongside its vast forest resources.

“Forests are the foundation for developing our natural capital, including for medicine, carbon sequestration and carbon trading,” he said.

Awang Tengah said Sarawak’s oil palm plantations, forest plantations and other resources could also support the development of a circular economy, including waste-to-energy initiatives.

He said the northern zone’s economic strengths are complemented by the distinct roles of its major urban centres.

“Miri, for example, has its strengths in services and tourism, while Bintulu is already well known for industries based on oil and gas,” he said
