LAWAS: The RM183 million Lawas Hospital project has been completed and officially handed over, providing a new 76-bed healthcare facility for Lawas and surrounding communities.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the completion signifies an important step towards providing residents with access to modern and quality healthcare facilities.
He said the hospital was developed to provide a more comprehensive, safe, comfortable and conducive healthcare environment in line with current healthcare needs.
“With a capacity of 76 beds, the facility is expected to improve the community’s access to quality healthcare services and contribute to their wellbeing.
“I also hope the hospital will serve as a catalyst for improving the quality of healthcare delivery in Lawas, while strengthening public confidence in the government’s commitment to meeting the people’s needs and ensuring their wellbeing,” he said during the project handover ceremony here today (Sept 14).
The project was undertaken by the Public Works Department’s (PWD) Special Project Team 2 from June 30, 2020, through a design-and-build approach, with MCS Management Sdn Bhd as the appointed contractor.
It was implemented at a total cost of RM183 million.
Nanta acknowledged that the project had faced various technical and operational challenges during its implementation, but said close cooperation and effective coordination among the parties involved enabled it to be completed and handed over.
At the same time, he reminded the contractor that its responsibilities would continue throughout the Defect Liability Period (DLP).
He said immediate action should be taken on any complaints or defects identified during the period.
“The PWD will also continue post-handover monitoring to ensure the facility functions properly, is appropriately maintained and continues to meet the stipulated specifications and standards,” he said.
He reiterated that the ministry and PWD remained committed to ensuring public development projects are delivered efficiently and to a high standard, while providing tangible benefits to the people.
“I hope Lawas Hospital will continue to benefit the community and stand as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the people’s wellbeing and quality of life,” he added.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.
