PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry (KDN) wants all agencies under it to use artificial intelligence (AI) in their core functions to improve productivity, efficiency and service delivery to the public, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the move was part of the ‘AI for KDN, KDN for AI’ approach developed by the ministry over the past three years, with the readiness of KDN personnel to adopt and use AI now reaching 75 per cent.
He said the next step was to help agencies translate the approach into their respective core functions, with the leadership of each agency responsible for driving its implementation to make work easier and faster.
“We have three years to help agencies under KDN start translating this into their core functions. If it is the National Registration Department, then it is for the National Registration Department. If it is Immigration, then it is for Immigration. If it is the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), then it is for the Royal Malaysia Police.
“The leadership of each agency must then drive this approach in terms of implementation to make things easier and faster,” he told reporters after attending KDN’s monthly assembly here today.
Saifuddin Nasution said one example of AI use in PDRM was the preparation of initial drafts of investigation papers, given that about 400,000 police reports are lodged by the public every month.
He said AI could be used to produce an initial draft of an investigation paper before it was reviewed and verified by an investigating officer (IO) with the rank of Inspector for submission to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP).
“Using AI technology in investigation papers means producing the first draft. But before it is submitted to the DPP, the IO with the rank of Inspector is responsible for verifying it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said KDN today launched ‘AI Digital Human’, another ministry initiative to use AI technology in interacting with the public.
He said the AI Digital Human would allow the public to make enquiries related to KDN in various languages, making dealings with the ministry easier and more user-friendly.
“Ask in Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese, just ask. The AI can answer all of them,” he said.
Earlier, in his speech, Saifuddin Nasution said the use of AI was a necessity for the ministry to ensure the technology was fully utilised in public service delivery.
He said KDN had previously become the first ministry to use AI to prepare initial drafts of responses to questions from MPs during Dewan Rakyat sittings, before the answers were reviewed and verified by ministry officers.
Saifuddin Nasution said AI use could also be expanded in PDRM services, including through kiosks at strategic locations such as airports to help foreign tourists lodge police reports in their respective languages.
“We cannot just sit by and let others use AI. Learn it and use it. We have to embrace it,” he said.
Besides AI Digital Human, he also launched the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (RELA) Anti-Corruption Strategies (RACS) and the RELA Security and Operations Control Manual (MKKOR).
On RACS, he said the strategy was important to ensure that integrity was also given due attention among RELA members, despite the force being based on volunteerism.
He said MKKOR was a mandatory manual that all RELA members undergoing training must understand and internalise, and use as a guide when assisting other security forces in duties such as roadblocks, controlling restricted areas or prohibited places, and border control. – BERNAMA
