KUCHING: Physical rehabilitation works on the major roadside collapse linking Kampung Grait and Kampung Git in Puncak Borneo are expected to begin this week or, at the latest, next week.
Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said the project has reached its implementation stage after nearly a year of technical investigations, engineering design, soil assessments and approval processes following the collapse in September 2025.
He said he had maintained close communication with the Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching, particularly its District Engineer, to monitor the progress of the repair works.
According to Willie, JKR’s operational team conducted detailed site investigations and classified the incident as a major roadside failure, requiring extensive rehabilitation rather than temporary repairs.
He explained that the rectification works would be carried out through JKR’s Instruction of Work (IW) mechanism by PPES, which was tasked with preparing a comprehensive engineering design through its appointed consultant.
“The proposal underwent several rounds of technical review to ensure full compliance with JKR’s safety standards, engineering specifications and material requirements.”
Willie added that the preliminary submission was reviewed by JKR Kuching before further revisions were made to incorporate geological findings and additional soil investigation (SI) requirements.
The revised drawings, SI report and final project costing have since been completed and submitted to the relevant approval committee.
In a significant development, JKR headquarters has granted consent for physical works to proceed while the remaining administrative correspondence and documentation are being finalised due to the urgency of the site.
“The contractor is now making the necessary mobilisation arrangements, and works are expected to commence within this week or next week at the latest.”
Willie acknowledged that many villagers had questioned the lengthy timeline but stressed that major slope rehabilitation must adhere to strict standard operating procedures and engineering requirements to ensure long-term safety and durability.
He thanked Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, JKR and PPES for their commitment, including securing the necessary funding for the project.
“To the residents of Kampung Grait, Kampung Git and surrounding villages, thank you for your patience, understanding and continued cooperation throughout this challenging period.”
He hoped the long-awaited repairs would restore safe access for residents and prevent further deterioration of the affected roadway.
