SIBURAN: Siburan has the potential to be elevated to a new district given its strategic location, as well as its rapidly growing population and economic activities.

Deputy Transport Minister (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the proposal to make Siburan a district had been raised more than 10 years ago.

He said the Siburan area, including Tapah and Beratok, has significant potential to develop into an important urban area and serve as a satellite town for Kuching and Serian in the future.

“The proposal to make Siburan a district was raised more than 10 years ago, taking into account its strategic location as well as the growing population and economic activities,” he said when attending the 2026 ‘Kiew Lian Tan Deities Birthday Celebration’ here recently.

He added that integrated development involving the three main areas of Tapah, Beratok and Siburan should continue to be given attention to establish a more organised and integrated growth area.

According to Dr Jerip, the organisation of various festivals and programmes in the area also demonstrates the potential of the local economy by attracting visitors from surrounding areas.

Dr Jerip, who is also Mambong assemblyman, said that besides attending celebrations and festivities, visitors also spent money at food stalls and participated in various activities provided, thereby generating economic spillover benefits for residents and villages in the surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, he said the Siburan Multipurpose Hall had received RM5 million in funding from the Sarawak government for renovation and upgrading works.

The allocation also covers efforts to obtain the Occupancy Permit (OP), as well as the addition of parking facilities to improve the comfort and usability of the hall.
