MIRI: Police have tracked down and issued two summonses to the driver of a Toyota Hilux after footage of the vehicle being driven against the flow of traffic along Jalan Taman Tunku went viral on social media.
The white four-wheel-drive vehicle was captured on a dashcam recording travelling against the designated traffic flow and failing to comply with road directional signs.
The footage, which was circulated on the Miri Community Facebook page, triggered strong public criticism, with motorists raising concerns over the potential danger posed to other road users.
Police moved quickly to identify the driver, with officers from the Miri Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD) locating the vehicle and its driver at about 3.20pm on Monday (Sept 14).
The driver was taken to the Miri Traffic Police office to assist with investigations and subsequently admitted to driving against the flow of traffic because he wanted to avoid waiting and take the nearest route.
Police said the driver had committed an offence under Rule 13 of the Road Traffic Rules 166/59 for failing to comply with traffic directional signs.
Two PDRM Form K257 summonses were issued against the driver in connection with the offences.
Police reminded motorists that traffic signs and road regulations must be obeyed at all times, warning that attempts to save time or avoid queues must not come at the expense of road safety.
The public was also urged to practise responsible driving and avoid manoeuvres that could endanger other road users.
