KUCHING: Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah’s time as Sarawak Police Commissioner has been short but far from uneventful, as he leaves the state to take up a new role as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Management Department director at Bukit Aman.
The Lawas-born took over as the state’s top cop on Sept 26 last year, returning to lead the police force in his home state before being elevated to the new position.
He is expected to report for duty at Bukit Aman on Oct 19.
Zainal’s successor as Sarawak Police Commissioner has yet to be announced.
During his tenure, Zainal also earned a reputation for being accessible to the media, regularly making himself available to provide updates and clarifications on major cases and operations.
From the Sri Aman couple murder and RM16.2 million Santubong drug seizure to the recent Long Lellang Flying Doctor Service helicopter crash that claimed five lives, he kept reporters and the public informed as investigations and operations unfolded.
His willingness to engage with the media was particularly evident during the Long Lellang tragedy, when police were coordinating the search and recovery operation in the remote interior.
Police have since recorded statements from 19 witnesses and are examining the helicopter’s flight path and final refuelling location as part of the investigation.
The Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters (IPK), in congratulating Zainal on his new appointment, praised his leadership, experience, integrity and dedication, as well as his emphasis on professionalism, police welfare and public safety.
Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak and the entire contingent wished him good health, strength and wisdom as he takes on his new responsibilities.
For Zainal, his stint as Sarawak police chief may have been brief, but his accessibility and commitment to keeping the public informed have left their mark as he moves on to his new role at Bukit Aman.
