KUCHING: A 70-year-old woman and her 39-year-old son were rescued from an upstairs room after a fire broke out at their house in Kenyalang Park today.
The incident happened at 2.58 am at Lorong Sim Kheng Hong 2, prompting firefighters from Padungan station to rush to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found a room on the ground floor engulfed in flames, with about 80 per cent of it damaged. The living room was also affected, with around 20 per cent of the area damaged.
Fearing that occupants could be trapped inside, firefighters immediately mounted a search and rescue (SAR) operation while simultaneously battling the blaze.
Their search led them upstairs, where they found two occupants — a man and his elderly mother — and brought both to safety.
The pair was later handed over to family members.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 3.40 am, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the house.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 4.10 am.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
