KUCHING: Leadership succession should prioritise continuity and preparation over timing.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s latest remarks on eventually making way for younger leaders should not be viewed in isolation as he had given similar indications on several occasions.

“This has been indicated either directly or indirectly by the Premier on several occasions.

“What is more important is the preparation for the handover. The timing is secondary,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

He said the focus should therefore be on how an eventual leadership change is managed, particularly in ensuring that Sarawak’s direction and plans are not disrupted when new leadership takes over.

“Part of the process of this handover is to ensure continuity of what has been planned under the new leadership, so that the transition is smooth,” said the Mambong assemblyman.

As for when the handover should take place, Dr Jerip left the judgment to Abang Johari.

“I believe he has the wisdom to decide when the most suitable time is, being a very good and responsible leader.”

He was responding to Abang Johari’s remarks at the PBB Northern Zone Special Convention in Miri on Sept 13, where the Premier raised the prospect of an eventual leadership transition.

Abang Johari, 76, had spoken about his age, succession and preparing younger leaders.

“I am 76 years old. In four years, I will be 80.

“I want to be frank, this may be my last time. We cannot go against the course of nature, even though in our hearts we may still feel young. Even if we are young at heart, we cannot go against the course of nature.

“But I will make the decision when the time comes,” he said.
