KUCHING: Malaysians should take Malaysia Day as an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the country’s formation, including the rights of Sabah and Sarawak and the federal government’s responsibilities under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said Sept 16 should not be regarded merely as a public holiday, but as an important occasion to reflect on the formation of the Federation of Malaysia and the country’s direction.
He said Malaysia Day commemorates the formation of Malaysia in 1963 involving the Federation of Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore.
As such, Dr Sim hoped Malaysians would gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history, including the position of Sabah and Sarawak’s rights and the federal government’s responsibilities under MA63 and the Federal Constitution.
“Let us celebrate Malaysia Day together with purpose, mission and vision,” he said in his special Malaysia Day message.
Dr Sim added that Sarawak has increasingly attracted attention, with high expectations placed on the state in shaping Malaysia’s future.
“Lately, many people have been looking towards Sarawak and placing their hopes on Sarawak as another way forward for Malaysia,” he said.
He called on Malaysians to use the Malaysia Day celebration as momentum to strengthen the spirit of togetherness and work collectively towards building the country’s future.
