KUCHING: Sarawak will receive a RM1.5 billion interim special grant from the Federal Government, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced tonight (Sept 16).
Anwar, speaking at the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), said the allocation reflected the spirit of solidarity and cooperation within the Malaysian federation.
The payment comes as Putrajaya and Sarawak continue discussions on a clearer formula for the state’s interim payment, an issue Anwar said last week would take into account the country’s financial position and current capacity.
“For Sarawak, I told Premier Abang Jo (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) that Sarawak’s financial position is strong.
“But in the spirit of solidarity, friendship and Malaysia, for the interim grant for Sarawak, I announce tonight RM1.5 billion,” he said.
Anwar said the agreement showed that outstanding matters between the Federal and Sarawak governments could be addressed through negotiation and mutual understanding.
“That is the secret of friendship and good negotiations. There is no problem that cannot be deliberated and resolved,” he said.
The Prime Minister also announced further improvements to the BUDI Diesel programme following feedback from Sabah and Sarawak.
Eligible owners of diesel-powered pick-up trucks and four-wheel-drive vehicles will receive a subsidised quota of 400 litres per month.
Eligibility transfers will also be extended beyond immediate family members to any eligible Malaysian citizen, while owners with more than one registered diesel vehicle may transfer the entitlement for each vehicle, up to a maximum of three vehicles.
The changes take effect immediately.
Anwar also announced a one-off RM500 airfare assistance for 7,095 eligible new students entering public universities, polytechnics and community colleges for the September/October intake.
The assistance is for students required to travel by domestic flights between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan to begin their studies.
