GEDONG: The upper reaches of the Sungai Skrang has the potential to further contribute to the socioeconomic development of the Gedong community through fisheries resources, including freshwater prawns and various fish species.
Special representative to the Gedong assemblyman Datuk Seri Naroden Majais said river resources has become one of the main sources of income for local residents, replacing logging and gold mining activities that were once key economic activities in the area.
He said strong market demand for freshwater prawns has also spurred fishing activities in the area.
According to Naroden, prawn fry released into the river could reach a market value of up to RM70 per kilogramme after six months, highlighting the potential of aquatic resources as a source of income for the local community.
“This proves that aquatic resources can provide a lucrative source of livelihood for residents if they are properly protected and managed,” he said during the Youth Exploration Programme to the Upper Sungai Skrang, Gedong, organised by the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) here recently.
The programme served as a platform to raise awareness of the potential of river resources, water safety and the importance of preserving aquatic ecosystems to ensure the sustainability of fishermen’s livelihoods.
The programme also exposed participants to the importance of safeguarding aquatic ecosystems as an economic asset for the community that requires continuous management and protection.
