KAPIT: Eighteen longhouses and Malay settlement areas in the Bukit Goram constituency received RM351,000 in Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to support community needs.
The recipients comprised 15 Village Security and Development Committees (JKKKs) representing longhouses along Sungai Kapit, Sungai Sesibau and Sungai Angau under the jurisdiction of Penghulu Madang Jelani.
The other three recipients were the JKKKs of Malay settlements, namely JKKK Lot Pembesaran Kampung Bleteh Fasa 2, JKKK Kampung Muhibbah Kapit and JKKK Kampung Baru Kapit.
The grants were presented by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat at a ceremony at a hotel here yesterday.
Jamit had previously presented similar grants to JKKKs along Batang Rajang, covering the Sungai Melipis, Belawai, Ibau, Yong and Menuan areas.
The grants also included allocations for non-governmental organisations, local clubs and associations, bringing the total amount to more than RM1 million.
Speaking at the ceremony, Jamit, who is also Bukit Goram assemblyman, said the development of Kapit was progressing rapidly with cooperation from the people.
He also highlighted the multi-racial nature of the Kapit community, saying residents were able to live and work together with mutual respect.
“Let us continue to uphold such tradition in the spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and honour.
“Let us work together to make Kapit a better place for us to live in,” he said.
On the coming general election, Jamit called for the people’s support to enable him to secure a bigger majority.
“As the election draws near, many aspiring candidates appear with sweet promises. Do not be easily hoodwinked by those empty promises and sweet talks,” he said.
Meanwhile, the 18 village headmen and community leaders present at the ceremony pledged their support for Jamit, the incumbent candidate for N63 Bukit Goram, to retain the seat and the deputy ministerial post.
