KUCHING: For years, DJ Zack was one of those voices that simply became part of the day – there through the afternoon, late at night and during some of Sarawak’s biggest moments.
Now, that familiar voice has fallen silent.
REDfm presenter Azrani Azmi, better known to listeners as DJ Zack, passed away on Tuesday night (Sept 22) at the age of 47.
Beyond the microphone, Azrani was also a radio producer, voice actor and emcee, building a career around the voice and personality listeners had come to recognise.
At REDfm, he presented the English programmes Midday Mix and After 9, while his Saturday night show House of Dance opened the airwaves to local disc jockeys and their music.
His work also took him beyond the studio.
In 2022, he represented REDfm in a special broadcast with TRAXXfm for Sarawak Day and later joined presenters from REDfm, SabahVfm and LangkawiFM in the nationwide Face to Face programme.
More recently, Azrani joined Fuad Rahim in delivering daily updates from the 2024 Malaysia Games in Sarawak, helping bring the atmosphere of the Games to listeners across the state.
According to a report, Azrani was found unconscious by a colleague at the RTM Sarawak office at about 8.40 pm on Tuesday.
He was taken to Sarawak General Hospital, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The cause of death has yet to be determined.
For listeners who knew him through the radio, however, DJ Zack leaves behind something more enduring – a voice woven into countless ordinary afternoons, late-night drives and moments shared over the airwaves.
