LUNDU: The construction of a new RM250,000 Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) church in Kampung Kendaie is set to provide the local Christian community with a more comfortable and conducive place of worship.
Opar assemblyman, Billy Sujang, said the new facility would also serve as a long-term community asset, benefiting both current worshippers and future generations.
He said the existing church had served the community for several decades, making the new building an important development to meet the community’s needs.
“The new church is not merely a physical development, but will also become a landmark for the community and a place of worship that can be used by generations to come,” he added.
He said this at the earth-breaking ceremony for the BEM Kampung Kendaie church here on Tuesday (Sept. 22).
Billy said the church development application was submitted around March before receiving approval for an allocation of RM250,000.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring that development applications were complete and submitted according to the prescribed procedures to facilitate the approval and implementation of projects.
According to him, he remained committed to supporting the development of places of worship in the Opar constituency in stages, subject to applications, approvals and prevailing needs.
Billy also called on the relevant parties to ensure the project was implemented according to the approved plans and specifications.
“A proper documentation and records, including those relating to contractor selection, should also be maintained to ensure good governance throughout the project,” he said.
At the ceremony, Billy also presented a RM1,500 Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to the SK Kendaie Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and RM10,000 to the Zone 3 Biawak Community Committee.
