SEBUYAU: Construction of the new five-million-litre-per-day (MLD) water treatment plant here has reached 79 per cent completion.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the nearly RM15 million project is funded by the Sarawak government and uses the acute system.
Once completed, the plant will provide additional treated water supply to Sebuyau and surrounding areas in Samarahan Division.
“The important thing is that the raw water can be obtained from Sungai Ular in Sebuyau, which originates from Sebuyau National Park,” he said in a Facebook post following a visit to the project site yesterday (Sept 23).
Sebuyau currently receives treated water from the 868 MLD Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant in Kuching, supplemented by the existing 3.2 MLD Sungai Ular plant.
Julaihi said another five MLD plant using the same system at Ensika Ulu Sungai Sebangan was recently completed.
He said both plants will support water supply in Sebuyau as well as Sadong Jaya, Simunjan and Asajaya.
The additional capacity, he added, will help ease the load and reduce dependence on water supplied from the Batu Kitang plant in Kuching.
