KUCHING: Several roads around Padang Merdeka will be closed from Sept 28 to facilitate preparations for the Grand Parade and Rally Ceremony in conjunction with the Head of State’s 80th Birthday Celebration.
Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the closures will affect key access routes during setting up, rehearsals, and the main event on Oct 10.
“Beginning Sept 28 at 10am, Jalan McDougall will be closed until midnight on Oct 10 to allow for the construction of the grandstand.
“Rehearsals for the parade will run from Oct 5 to 7, between 7am and 11am daily,” he said.
During these times, Jalan McDougall, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Wawasan, Carpenter Street, and all access roads leading to Padang Merdeka will be cordoned off.
The full dress rehearsal is scheduled for Oct 8, from 7am to 11am.
Affected routes for the full rehearsal include Jalan McDougall, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Wawasan, Carpenter Street, Temple Street towards Wayang Street, Jalan Main Bazaar, and Jalan Gambier towards Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
These streets will also be closed on the event day, Oct 10, from 7am to 12pm, as well as from 7pm to midnight for the Konsert Rakyat.
The police chief advised motorists to plan their trips in advance, utilize alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion, and refrain from parking along the roadside.
