MIRI: A security alarm triggered by suspected interference with electrical cables led to the arrest of three women here in joint operations involving police and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) auxiliary personnel.
The women, aged between 38 and 40, were detained at about 9.05 pm last Friday at a location along Jalan Miri-Pujut, near the Miri Central Fire and Rescue Station, where they were allegedly attempting to steal SEB cables.
The incident began about two hours earlier when SEB received an alarm alert at around 7:00 pm indicating possible interference with its cables at the site.
SEB subsequently alerted the Miri District Police Headquarters, prompting personnel from its Criminal Investigation Division to respond with assistance from SEB’s auxiliary police.
Their response resulted in the arrest of the three suspects and the seizure of various items believed to be relevant to the investigation.
Police checks also found that all three women had previous records involving criminal offences and drug-related offences.
They have been remanded for three days until September 29 to facilitate investigations under Section 431A of the Penal Code.
The provision carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Miri police also praised the swift cooperation between SEB and the police, saying the incident demonstrated the importance of prompt reporting and coordinated action in tackling property-related crime.
