MIRI: A group that grew out of SMK Chung Hua Miri’s marching band is heading to its first national music competition, with 22 students representing Sarawak in Terengganu.
CH Hornsea Grandioso, whose members are in Forms One to Four, will compete in the Pertandingan Jaz Orchestra Generasi Madani Perpaduan event at the Islamic Civilisation Park (TTI) Convention Centre.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, said the debut was a meaningful step for the group, which developed from the school’s marching band.
“I am proud and excited that they have this opportunity to make their national debut and represent Sarawak,” he said when seeing the group off at Miri Airport today.
Sebastian, who is also Piasau assemblyman, said the competition would give the students a chance to perform beyond Sarawak and gain experience alongside other young musicians.
According to a report, he said their journey showed how far local talent could go when students are given opportunities and support.
Sebastian also wished the students, teachers and accompanying parents a smooth trip.
“I hope they enjoy every moment of their performance, give their best on the national stage, and return with valuable experiences and memories,” he said.
