SAN JOSE, California, United States (US): Apple has been ordered by a US jury to pay more than USD5.7 billion for infringing two patents, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
Taction Technology accused the iPhone maker of using its technology in Apple’s so-called Taptic Engine, which powers functions including vibration alerts on the iPhone and Apple Watch.
Apple told US broadcaster CNBC that it disagreed with the verdict issued on Friday and planned to appeal.
The company said it did not use Taction’s technology.
Large damages awards are not uncommon in US patent cases, but they are frequently reduced, sometimes substantially, on appeal.
The jury also found that Apple had not wilfully infringed the patents.
Had it found that Apple had done so, the damages could have been tripled. – BERNAMA-dpa
