JOHOR BAHRU: Police have confirmed that a six-year-old boy who was found unconscious in a retention pond near Taman Sungai Mas, Kulai, yesterday died from drowning.

Kulai district police chief ACP Tan Seng Lee said the boy was believed to have gone fishing alone at the pond, located about 50 metres from his home.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s parents had left for work at about 6.30 am while the boy and his 17-year-old sister were still asleep.

“At about 10 am, an acquaintance told the victim’s mother that her son had been found unconscious in the pond,” he said in a statement today (Nov 5).

Tan said a fishing rod was also found near the scene.

He said the victim was pronounced dead at 11.15 am by a medical officer from Kulai Hospital after firefighters retrieved him from the pond.

Tan said a post-mortem examination confirmed drowning as the cause of death.

He added that police found no signs of foul play at the scene and had classified the case as a sudden death report (SDR), with investigations ongoing.

Tan also urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children and ensure they do not engage in activities near ponds, rivers or other potentially dangerous bodies of water without adult supervision.

A six-year-old boy reportedly died after falling into a water retention pond yesterday morning.

Kulai Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Awang Adzwan Awang Sahari said the department received an emergency call about the incident at 10.17 am yesterday.

He said six personnel from the Kulai Fire and Rescue Station, along with an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, were dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the operational team discovered that a young boy had fallen into the retention pond while fishing alone. The team used ropes and a stretcher to extricate the victim,” he said. -BERNAMA
