MIRI: Police arrested a male student of a private college here and seized cannabis worth RM12,000 in front of an eatery at Bandar Baru Permyjaya here, last Friday.

State Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) chief, Supt Sahar Abdul Latiff said the 19-year-old suspect was detained by police while waiting inside a Toyota Vios car at around 1.30pm.

He said while checking the car, the police found 532 grammes of cannabis.

“Following the arrest, the police carried out an inspection at the suspect’s house in Desa Pujut and seized 269 grammes of cannabis as well as RM1,800 in cash,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

Sahar said the suspect, believed to be a drug dealer in this district, had been selling drugs for the past seven months.

He said early investigation revealed that the suspect was believed to have obtained the drugs from a drug dealer in West Malaysia.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952 which provides a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

“The suspect has been remanded for seven days to facilitate investigation,” said Sahar.
