KUCHING: The Sarawak State Ownership Policy has been described as a bold and strategic initiative to strengthen the state’s economic sovereignty and move closer to realising the aspirations of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Ba’kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian expressed strong support for the policy and commended the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for introducing the policy, which he said reflects a clear commitment to optimising natural resources, diversifying the economic base and promoting responsible asset management guided by sound principles and professional standards.

“The initiative enhances Sarawak’s capacity to determine its own policies in critical sectors such as education, health and energy,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

Baru also welcomed the state’s initiative to secure greater control over key resources, such as regulatory authority over liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through PETROS, as a step towards building a self-reliant and resilient economy.

This, he added, will create new opportunities to strengthen inclusive development, especially in rural and interior areas.

He further highlighted the policy’s emphasis on digital transformation, innovation and green energy, which he believes will position Sarawak as a leader in the digital and sustainable economy.
“With the right infrastructure and environment, more Sarawakians can become creators of value rather than just consumers,” he emphasised.

Baru pointed out that the endorsement of the policy by economists and the World Bank highlighted its credibility and strategic importance, providing a strong foundation for effective partnerships that will benefit the state and its people.

“I fully support this forward-looking initiative and believe it will pave the way for a stronger, more self-sufficient and prosperous Sarawak where development is inclusive, sustainable and future-ready,” he said.
