KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg paid tribute to Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, saying that he is known as a leader of great integrity and credibility.
He also said Wan Junaidi is a statesman committed to the development of Sarawak and the well-being of its people.
“Throughout his career – as a legal practitioner, politician, minister, and later as the Governor of Sarawak – Wan Junaidi has consistently demonstrated exceptional wisdom, humility and compassion.
“Thus, the books are not merely a documentation of Tun Pehin Sri’s career and achievements but also highlights the values of leadership, perseverance, and patriotism that should inspire present and future generations,” he said.
He said this during the launching of two books – ‘Pejuang Sejati: Dari Rimba Ke Astana’ and ‘365 Days in Astana: Story and Portraits of His Excellency Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’ – held at Dewan Santapan, Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex, here last night.
Abang Johari further said Wan Junaidi’s sincerity and dedication in advancing Sarawak’s prosperity and rights form an invaluable legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
He then recalled Wan Junaidi’s journey in politics.
“In 1987, we faced a great challenge within our community and also within the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
“During this time, as the elected representative for Satok, Tun struggled with me as a leader in Satok area and he believed that we must unite our community.
“We could not afford to be divided as Sarawak was still in the process of developing. Because of this, he offered himself to help in the efforts to unify our community, as there were some struggles within our party,” he said.
He added that the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had suggested that Wan Junaidi be one of the candidates in Batang Lupar constituency, and Wan Junaidi won the election with excellence.
On the books, he said he believed they are highly suitable for readers of all backgrounds.
The book ‘365 Days in Astana’ in particular has been documented in the form of a photo book, compiling images that chronicle the journey of Wan Junaidi over the course of one year as the Sarawak Head of State since January 26, 2024.
“The contents of this book are comprehensive, featuring captivating photographs accompanied by captions that carry their own unique style, effectively explaining the events captured in the images,” he said.
He further said it is more than a mere collection of images; it is a narrative that captures the essence of responsibility, respect and dedication.
“The events recorded in the book depict and define the esteemed role of the Tun Pehin Sri, presenting a story woven with historical significance and human connections.
“Each portrait tells readers a story, providing a brief glimpse into the diverse responsibilities beyond the public eye – from fostering unity among Sarawak’s varied population to representing the state nationally and internationally.
“Astana Negeri Sarawak, the grand residence and administrative centre of the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri, serves as the majestic backdrop to this profound journey. It symbolises Sarawak’s rich heritage, where history and modernity blend seamlessly. Within its halls, discussions on governance, culture and the future take place,” he said.
He added that the portraits in the book vividly showcase the grandeur of this symbolic place, capturing moments of royal splendour during official events, as well as quieter moments of reflection and familial harmony.
“Beyond the formalities lie a deeper story within this volume – one that reveals the human aspect of leadership,” he said.
“It portrays Tun Pehin Sri not just as an authority figure, but as a guide with a profound well of empathy and purpose. His engagements with young people, veterans, community leaders, NGOs and foreign dignitaries serve as poignant reminders that leadership, fundamentally, is about serving humanity,” he said.
Thus, he said, the ‘365 Days in Astana’ book offers an intimate portrayal of these moments in the life of the eighth Head of State of Sarawak.
On the book ‘Pejuang Sejati: Dari Rimba Ke Astana’, Abang Johari reiterated that it unveils the life story of Wan Junaidi from his younger days serving as a policeman, his journey as a politician, and ultimately his appointment as the Head of State of Sarawak on January 26, 2024.
“I believe that readers of this book will gain a deeper understanding of both the personal and professional sides of a figure who has contributed greatly to this state. May this work serve as a valuable reference and a source of inspiration for all.
“Additionally, I hope that locally published books like these will encourage more young people to develop an interest in reading,” he said.
