FOLLOWING the recent increase in the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on April 16, recipients are looking forward to the May 15 disbursement.
Many believe the additional funds will help ease the strain of rising daily expenses, particularly for basic necessities.
Sarawak Tribune spoke to several recipients to find out how the increased aid is expected to make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.

FLORENNA LINDA LANYAU, 23, private sector employee
“The increased SKAS rate will provide a timely cushion for daily essentials, helping to manage the rising cost of living. While basic necessities will be better covered, other commitments like rent and utilities remain a priority for many. As inflation continues to affect prices, I hope the government maintains this momentum and considers further adjustments in the future to keep the aid effective.”

MELLISA BERUNDANG, 43, civil servant
“This assistance will serve as a lifeline for low-income earners, specifically in managing household expenses. The funds will primarily be used for kitchen essentials, both dry and wet goods. For those with young children, items like milk powder and diapers must be the priority. Moving forward, I believe the aid should be maintained and adjusted according to current economic trends. It would also be a great improvement if the SKAS scope could be expanded to include fuel purchases, such as petrol.”

AHMAD ASRI MOHAMMADIN, 34, private sector employee
“This assistance will be incredibly helpful given the steady rise in commodity prices. It will ensure that families can still put food on the table every day. I plan to use the funds for staples like rice, cooking oil, sugar, and eggs. I truly appreciate our Premier’s efforts; he clearly understands the hardships faced by the grassroots. While the amount is reasonable for now, I believe it should be increased eventually to offset the continuous price hikes.”

AHMAT SULAILI, 69, farmer
“This aid will provide significant financial relief, especially toward the middle and end of the month when income tends to run low. My main priority will be buying rice as it is our daily staple, followed by wet goods like fish, chicken, and vegetables. I strongly feel this assistance should continue. However, because prices are skyrocketing so sharply, I hope the amount can be reviewed and raised in the future to better align with the current cost of living.”
