BINTULU: The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) aims to transform the Bintulu Marathon into a prestigious international sporting event, propelling the town onto the global map.

BDA general manager Datuk Muhamad Yakup Kari said the annual marathon is more than just a race; it catalyses promoting local tourism, economic growth, and cultural exchange.

“I hope to see the Bintulu Marathon continue growing into a premier event in the region.

“It is not merely a competition for runners, but an important platform to showcase our tourism, culture, and local community to the world,” he said.

He made these remarks during a press conference following the prize-giving ceremony for the Bintulu Marathon 2025 at Lasar Kenyalang on Sunday.

According to him, the success of the 2025 edition which attracted nearly 9,000 participants from 21 countries, is a strong indication that Bintulu is ready to stand alongside other top marathon destinations in the region.

“Bintulu is gaining traction among international runners. We must seize this opportunity to elevate the Bintulu Marathon brand as a signature event for Sarawak and Borneo,” he stressed.

Muhamad Yakup added that BDA will enhance global promotional efforts, introduce new inclusive categories for all age groups, and improve the overall participant experience from race routes and logistics to on-site facilities.

“We want runners to come not just to run, but to experience the uniqueness of Bintulu from its natural landscapes and warm hospitality to its rich culture and local cuisine,” he said.

He also called on all parties, including government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and the local community, to continue offering their full support to ensure the Bintulu Marathon remains relevant and grows stronger year after year.

As an early step, the date for the Bintulu Marathon 2026 has been set for August 2, 2026, with promotional efforts to be launched ahead of time to ensure broader participation.

“I am confident that with careful planning and sustained support, we can make Bintulu a sports destination that is not only admired but eagerly anticipated by runners around the world,” he added.

The Bintulu Marathon 2025 marked a new milestone as runners, for the first time, traversed the newly opened Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on July 23.

“This year’s route was truly special. Runners, especially international participants, were thrilled to run across this iconic bridge, which offers breathtaking views of the Kuala Kemena River and the Bintulu townscape,” Muhamad  Yakup said.
